What is Soap

What is Soap?

Soap is the result of the chemical reaction produced by mixing lye with water and oils.  The name of the chemical reaction is "saponification", and the result is the creation of soap (which is the oldest cleanser around) and glycerin, which is a humectant that draws moisture to itself by absorbing it from the air.

All soaps are created with lye, but some soaps are created with animal fats (such as lard) while others are created with vegetal oils.  Since Fasani's is a cruelty free company, we do not use any animal by-product in our products.  All our soaps are 100% vegetal.

What are the Differences Between Handmade and Regular Soaps?

The first and most obvious difference is the price.  You can buy a commercial 4 ounces bar of soap for cents on the dollar.  Handmade soaps can cost anything from $4 to even $10 a bar or more.  The reason for that difference in prices is the ingredients present in conventional bars and handmade bars.

As explained before, when soap is made you get two by-products: soap (which is the cleanser) and glycerin, which is the product that is going to protect your skin and keep it moisturize.  Conventional soap makers separate these two products by adding SALT to the chemical reaction and use the glycerin in other products such as body creams, which have a higher profit margin for them.

Conventional Soap
Most soaps available in the store today are not really soaps at all, but detergents. Detergents tend to leave your skin feeling dry, itchy and tight. Alkali, the most common irritant in soap is most often blamed for this effect. Other ingredients in mass-marketed soap have been proven harmful to human health and can cause severe skin irritations in some people. These include ingredients such as DEA, Isopropyl Alcohol, BHT and Triclosan (commonly found in anti-bacterial soap). The most common ingredient in conventional bar soaps is sodium tallowate. It is the natural product of combining tallow, or beef fat, with lye. Tallow processes quickly, produces a harder bar of soap and is cheap and plentiful making it attractive for mass producing and marketing conventional soap.

Benefits Of Handmade Soap
There are said to be many healing properties of a handmade bar of soap. Those who suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, as well as people that have sensitive skin or are hypoallergenic often find immediate relief by switching to an all-natural chemical free handmade soap.
Skin is the largest human organ and is the body’s first line of defense against dehydration, temperature, infection and harmful substances. Handmade soaps give your skin the care it deserves and make bathing a gentle, soothing experience.
